WITNESS THE FITNESS 5

NO MORE EXCUSES

You don’t have to be evangelical in your approach to discussing exercise to be met with resistance in some circles.  Some people are just staunchly resistant to wanting to be remotely educated or reminded at even the most peripheral level that exercise is actually something that everyone should make time for.  Some may respond that it’s stupid or a waste of time, others don’t want to exert themselves, in fact there are so many reasons to put off doing any exercise that it’s a wonder that anyone ever gets round to it at all.

No Time to Exercise
Well who hasn’t felt that they’re too busy and committed elsewhere to make the time to workout?  Sometimes though you just have to prioritise the exercise and let the housework and TV slide for an hour.  In fact 30 minutes to increase your cardiovascular fitness is probably all you need and with 1,440 minutes in your day, yes that’s every day, it’s pretty clear that anyone can find a 30 minute slot to concentrate on doing something good for their health.  And, who said you had to do it all at once.  Though it’s probably preferable to focus and hunker down and get the job done, but conceivably there’s no argument to say it couldn’t be split between a power walk to work, some lunchtime activity (squats and lunges and get creative in the stairwell) and maybe a core session at the end of the day.  Based on what facilities and opportunities you have available, get outside and get creative rather than slumping over social media in the staff room.

Too Tired to Exercise
Studies show that energy is self-generating.  The more exercise you do the more energy you'll have.  Exercise will have you up and bouncing around looking and feeling great on the outside and invigorated and energised on the inside.

Exercise is Waste of Time
Those who genuinely think that exercise is not time well matched with reward are people who really don’t understand the broader picture and need a steep learning curve.  Many people turning to fitness are probably encouraged by wanting to lose a pound or two and there’s nothing wrong with that but they may be missing the many other benefits associated with an active lifestyle.  For these people if the results don’t occur quickly enough or as they’d anticipated their resolve slips and it’s back to business as usual.  The point here is that any lack of visible or aesthetic results does not render the effort a waste of time.  There are so many changes taking place to the internal mechanics that it’s very much worth the time and outlay in energy.  Improved cardiovascular capacity and a lower resting heart rate, joint mobility or lowered cholesterol are all benefits to take into later life and all every bit as important if not more so than a trimmer waistline.  All these health gains prove that your exercise time is a worthwhile and valuable use of your time.

Exercise is Expensive
In fairness you don’t really hear people use this as an excuse as everyone has some leggings and a pair of trainers and can run round the park for free but yes a regular gym membership is quite a commitment so it’s best to know you will get your money’s worth before signing up.  Being enthusiastic for 3 months and getting known as a regular face in the place only for it to lapse into you back spending evenings on the couch not the Stairmaster while your bank balance is still getting a rigorous workout is a harsh reminder of the no pain no gain mantra.

All you really need is your own bodyweight to make a start at getting in shape.  You can start with press ups, squats, lunges and crunches as these days there’s so much information on the web to help you if you’re at a beginner level.  They’ll guide you through posture and execution and there are even entire fitness workouts on YouTube all for free.

Invest in some good supportive shoes though for whatever you plan to do and specialised disciplines require specialist footwear.
